On the 4th August 1892, the bodies of Andrew and Abby Borden were found massacred in their home in River Falls, Massachusetts. The day was extreamly hot, over one hundred degrees. The daughter Lizzie found her elderly father lying on the living room sofa with his face cut to pieces by eleven blows with an axe.
Lizzie sent Bridget Sullivan (the maid) to fetch the doctor, whilst a friendly neighbour offered Lizzie some help. In their search they found the dead body of Lizzie’s stepmother upstairs. She had also been butchered with eighteen to twenty blows also with an axe. They had both been dead approximately one and a half hours.
Lizzie, was a respectable, church going Sunday school teacher, who became prime suspect. She was charged with parricide (the murder of parents). She went through a trial and was strangely acquitted. The loyal locals say she got a fair trail; in denial, that a daughter could murder her own parents. But evidence showed that she had purchased prussic acid the day before, and her statements were inconsistent.
Some people outside Fall River, believe that Lizzie’s defence attorneys outmanoeuvred the prosecution and set free an evil murderer.
Ghost Hunting at Lizzie Borden’s House
In Ghost (see below) the author stayed at the Borden’s house overnight: it is now a guest house. On that particular evening she was the only guest at the B & B. Well equipped with several ghost hunting instruments she slept in the murdered Abby’s bedroom. Abby’s attack had been dealt by someone in a fit of rage. If any sightings were to be seen it would be in Abby’s room.
The author did sleep, and dreamt of a woman talking to her. In the morning she found her recorder had been switched off. The events are recorded in her book, Ghost.
