Black carriage of Enfield

A black coach with phantom horses pays a regular visit to Bell Lane, Enfield, England. It is believed that the coach belonged to 17th Century Judge Jeffrey’s, the notorious Lord Chief of Justice who believed in hanging political rebels. His reign of terror was brought to an end by his untimely death in the Tower of London.

It was reported in 1899, by three factory girls from Ponders End going home from work. They witnessed the coach apparently rise out of the ground and travel in a southerly direction. The girls stated that the occupiers of the coach were without features.

In 1912, a lamplighter saw it passing through a house. Obviously, this was not on the coach’s path at its time of living.

There have been many sightings over the years, the most recent being a man who lived near Bell Lane in 1944. Whilst cycling home from work he noticed a black cloud approaching with bright lights. In an instant he saw a tall black, box shape coach, being drawn by a team of black horses. It silently rocked from side to side, with the coachman in the driver’s seat. The wheels appeared to be a foot from the ground, and a blue light surrounded the coach. Inside, an illuminated white light showed it contained several passengers. The driver was wearing a tall black hat. (See Nadine Ward’s Story)

This same apparition was also witnessed by a young boy on his bicycle, who apparently fled in fright. It was also noted that the overhead trolley bus cables were vibrating, although there was no bus in sight or wind to cause the situation.

Christmas 1957, a young girl who lived in Eastfield Cottages, Bell lane recalled looking out of her window, thinking that the coach was in fact Santa’s sleigh. She woke her brother and they both watched the coach pass the gates of Albany Park before disappearing down Bell Lane.

Numerous people have witnessed the Black Coach; its sightings seem to follow the route through Albany Park, Bell Lane, Enfield Highway, Forte Hall and Enfield Ridgeway. There is a map showing an old trackway, whereby, it depicts the path that was actually used by Judge Jeffrey’s black coach.
